Patient Outcome Report

July 2023–June 2024

The Medical Rehabilitation Program at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital is a comprehensive rehabilitation program dedicated to medically complex conditions, including pulmonary and cardiac conditions, cancer, neurologic conditions such as radiculopathy and myelopathy, COVID-19, transplants, general deconditioning from long-term hospitalization and other conditions. We provide a continuum of care, including acute inpatient services, outpatient services, community re-entry services and support groups. Our comprehensive program of care ensures our patients receive the most appropriate treatment based on their injury and their personal needs.

Our patients receive a minimum of three hours of combined physical and occupational therapy at least five out of seven days. Additional services, such as higher intensity physical and occupational therapy, speech pathology, psychology, cognitive retraining, recreational therapy and other services are provided based on our assessment of each patient’s individual needs.

Functional outcomes

On admission, patients in our Medical Rehabilitation Program need maximal assistance to complete activities of daily living, including getting dressed, walking and getting in and out of bed. This means they can complete less than 50 percent of the tasks on their own.

On average, patients discharged from the Medical Rehabilitation Program require only supervision. For many individuals, we help improve overall health, stabilize medical conditions and prevent secondary complications. This means our patients can complete most of each daily task, but they may require some physical assistance for more difficult tasks.

Discharge

Most patients who receive intensive, inpatient therapy as part of our comprehensive Medical Rehabilitation Program are admitted from an acute care hospital where they stayed for several days to several weeks. Prior to that, most individuals were living at home, either alone or with family members.

Following discharge from Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital, 76.9 percent of our patients were able to return home; 4.8 percent required ongoing care at a skilled nursing facility; and 18.3 percent were re-admitted to an acute care hospital due to medical instability.

Patient satisfaction

The primary focus of our Medical Rehabilitation Program is to provide the highest quality, personalized clinical patient care. There are many factors that contribute to success, including our outstanding clinical care team of physicians, nurses and therapists, as well as a calming, healing environment.
