Lankenau Medical Center, Riddle Hospital recognized for excellence in patient safety

Bryn Mawr, PALankenau Medical Center and Riddle Hospital, both part of Main Line Health, have received statewide recognition for their outstanding performance in patient safety.

The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) is recognizing the two hospitals through its 2024 Excellence in Patient Safety Recognition program. The recognition honors top-performing Pennsylvania hospitals that have demonstrated low rates of healthcare-associated infections. Lankenau Medical Center was recognized in 2023 as well.

“One of the things that I am most proud of is the consistency in our performance,” said Katie Galbraith, MBA, FACHE, President of Lankenau Medical Center. “Patient safety is our top priority and it shows in the efforts of every single person who works at our campus. Preventing infection means saving lives, and I am thrilled that this honor reflects we are doing just that.”

Shelly Buck, DNP, MBA, President of Riddle Hospital, said she was gratified to see that Riddle Hospital reached the high bar set by HAP to attain the designation.

“It’s a wonderful achievement to receive this honor,” Buck said. “Everyone at Riddle Hospital knows they have an important role to play — physicians, nurses, the environmental services team and so many others. There are many vital steps, large and small, to ensure our patients are shielded from infection. Our staff performs every single one to ensure the safety of those who entrust their care to us.”

HAP is recognizing 22 hospitals this year based on their performance during 2023. HAP identifies top-performing hospitals using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Healthcare Safety Network. To be recognized, hospitals must perform better than the mean standardized infection ratio in three key measures: central line-associated bloodstream infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, and occurrences of Clostridioides difficile (C. diff).

“Delivering high-quality and safe care to their communities is hospitals’ top priority,” HAP President and CEO Nicole Stallings said. “HAP is proud to recognize the Pennsylvania hospital teams that have achieved outstanding results from their commitment to continuous quality and safety improvement.”
